ĦĦĦĦDatong is rich
in historic sites and scenic spots with unique styles.Within
the boundaries of the city,there are over 300 historic
spots,7 of which are under special protection by the
state and 29 by the provice.The world-famous Yungang
grottoes, Mt.Hengshan,the Hanging monastery,the Nine-Dragon
screen,the Huayan monastery and the nearby Mt.Wutai(the
Buddhist shrine)and the Wooden pagoda and so on make
the city an important tourist zone in north China.
ĦĦĦĦThe yungang Grottoes,one of China's three major treasure-houses
of art is located at the southern foot of Mt.Wuzhou,16kilometres
west of Datong.stretching on kilometer from east to
west.The construction of the grottoes began in A.D.453.The
existing 53 grottoes still houses 51000 statues,lifelike
and in different manners.Mt.Hengshan,one of China's
Five Sacred Mountains,is a major scenic spot of the
country,the Hanging Monastery,high up in the air,was
constructed closely against the cliff and rested on
the beams partly inserted into the rocks.The magnificent
Upper Huayan Monastery has the largest Buddhist hall
existing in China and Lower is the treasure among the
extant liao sculptures in China.Datong has long been
famed as the home of dragons and the nine dragon-walls
built in the Ming Dynasty has still existed in the city.
